The World Values Survey, sponsored by the BBVA Foundation, recently published the results of its 1999-2002 studies, revealing that the most trusted institutions (64% support rate world-wide) were religious.
The research was spearheaded by the American sociologist Ronald Inglehart, who has collaborated with the European Union’s “Eurobarometer” since the 1970’s. The 200,000 people surveyed for this fourth edition represent 85% of the world population concentrated in “81 societies.” The primary goal of the study was to predict “cultural changes” by asking people about their views and hopes for their own lives.
When asked where they find “consolation and strength,” religion was the number one response. Percentages ranged from, 100% in Egypt to 33% in Sweden, with the world average at 64%. Areas scoring more than 70%, in ascending order, were: Italy, Chile, Greece, Argentina, the United States, Croatia, Poland, India, Romania, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Uganda, Tanzania, Pakistan, Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt. Less than 50% found “consolation and strength” in religion and religious institutions in (in descending order): Australia, Hungary, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Denmark and Sweden.
Compared to other developed countries, the United States shows higher rates of attachment to religion (80%) and around 75% trust some religious institution. The armed forces are trusted by 61% of the world population, governments by 50%, large companies by 47%, the press by 44%, parliaments by 41% and political parties by 30%.

他の先進国と比較した際、アメリカ合衆国 は宗教に対して愛着を示す割合が他国よりも高い（８０％）上、およそ７５％の人がある宗教組織を信奉している。 世界の人口の６１％は軍隊を、５０％は政府を、４７％は大企業を、４４％は報道機関を、４１％は議会と政党を信用している。
