An interesting philosophical discussion of what constitutes beauty.
A capitalist may take the view that aesthetics is out-of-sync with a
utilitarian world; a hedonist may hold that beauty is whatever makes us
stare or feel sensually gratified. Marxists have complained that earlier
standards only served to reinforce bourgeois values、and the act itself of
disinterested contemplation is bourgeois: art has to be engaged. Realists
insist the artist must find beauty in nature; subjectivists can seem
allergic to all discussion of "good" or "bad" art.
Donoghue, in a very readable style, takes a critical look at these and
other arguments. He himself feels that a commitment to beauty is needed
lest society become "indifferent to smog, litter... lurid
communications, wretched TV, billboards, strip malls, blatancies of noise
and confusion− or it considers these things the price you have to pay to
make more money," which sooner or later would hurt the soul as surely
as deficiencies of certain minerals will hurt the human body.
Original insights and judicious quotes abound, and succeed in arguing, in
an unsystematic way, that good art does uplift the human spirit. He cites
Hans Urs von Balthasar’s The Glory of the Lord in saying,"Before the
beautiful-no, not really before but within the beautiful-the whole person
quivers. He not only "finds" the beautiful moving; rather, he
experiences himself as being moved and possessed by it. The more complete
this experience is, the less does a person seek and enjoy only the delight
that comes through the senses or even through any act of his own; the less
also does he reflect on his own acts and states. Such a person has been
taken up wholesale into the reality of the beautiful and is now fully
subordinate to it, determined by it, animated by it."

資本主義者は、美学と実用社会とは同時に扱うことができないという考えを持っているかもしれない。快楽主義者は、眺めたり感じたりすることで我々が官能を感じるものを美と考えているかもしれない。マルクス主義者は、過去の価値基準はブルジョワの価値観を高めるために用いられていたし、非経済的な鑑賞という行為自体がブルジョウ的であると不平を述べたものだ。芸術家は自然の中にこそ美を見出さなければならない、と現実主義者は主張している。主観論者は、「良い」芸術や「悪い」芸術という議論自体に、アレルギー反応を示しているように思われる。
Donoghueは、とても読みやすい文体で、以上のような議論に批判的である。社会が「スモッグ、ごみ、荒荒しい意思疎通や、低俗なテレビ、下品な掲示板、不快なストリップ街、騒音の騒々しさと混乱した状態にならないために、あるいは以上のことをもっと金儲けをするために支払わなければならない代償と考えないために」―あるミネラルが不足すると人体は損傷を受けるように、今まで列挙したことをすることで魂は損傷を受ける―美に参与することは必要であるとDonoghue自身感じている。
